Championship Bound!

Hello all!  I write this after 10pm, the night before our little 1A high school football team will play in the state championship game.  This is for all the marbles, the right to call themselves State Champs!  I know all those kids are super excited just to have made it to this arena to compete for the first time in school history.  The whole community is super excited too.  A local business was printing t-shirts for the game and was going to open at 8 am to start selling them.  There were already 5 or 6 six cars full of people waiting to buy them at 7:30.  I know, I was one of them!  I figure the shirts are a great keepsake of the occasion no matter how it turns out when the clock winds down to zero.  I am just happy to see them there.  But seeing all the people waiting in line for shirts and knowing there would be many more coming through before the day's over, made me wonder.  How many of us are at church 30 minutes or more early waiting for the doors to be unlocked??  Not many I bet.  When I was a kid, my mother was usually the one who unlocked the door!  But these days, I am not quite so early getting there.  I am plenty early mind you, I just don't unlock the door anymore.  But how many times are we tempted to just skip church altogether because we "feel bad" or at the very least slip in late after Sunday School just for preaching?  I know it can be tempting to wait till later or just not go, but where would we be today if Jesus had decided to be late to His meeting with destiny in the Garden of Gethsemane?  What if He had decided to just not show up for the cross on Calvary's hill?  He could have, you know.  He could have called ten thousand angels to rescue Him from his fate.  But He didn't.  He was right on time and doing just what His father had set before Him to do.  He played His part in the greatest Championship game of all time.  And He won redemption and grace for you and I for all eternity.  We can live in Heaven with Him without suffering the agony of the cross as payment for our sins.  How's that for the ultimate Christmas gift??  Never before or since has obedience to the will of God had such a profound and lasting effect.  I pulled up from the back corners of my mind an old song I used to sing a small child this week.  I sat down at the piano and found a key I could sing it in and played through it.  The title says it all, "He Didn't Come Down".  He could have called angels to set Him free, but He stayed on that cross, and He didn't come down.  How awesome is that?  It was all for us, the lowliest of sinners, yet made in His image and loved enough by the Father to send His son to set us free.  If that don't light your fire, your wood is wet!  So maybe these few random thoughts will fuel your imagination and get you to thinking about just how good God is and just what Jesus did for us so long ago.  May the Lord bless you richly this week and keep you safe.  Until later......
